Freight

Long-Haul Trucking, Western U.S.

Eleven states, one driver, one truck — from the LA basin to wherever in the West the load has to be.

Cargo Taxi Deliveries runs long-haul freight from Los Angeles across eleven western states — California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado. The sleeper-cab truck covers multi-day lanes continuously, so Los Angeles to Denver or Seattle runs without a forced overnight layover.

Long-haul is where the sleeper cab earns its keep. Hours-of-service rules mean a driver without a sleeper has to stop and find somewhere to park for ten hours, which on a Los Angeles to Denver lane turns a long day into most of a week. A sleeper lets the rest happen in the truck at the right point in the route, and the transit time stops depending on whether there was room at a truck stop outside Barstow.

The lanes run in every direction out of the basin: north up the I-5 to the Bay Area, Sacramento, Portland and Seattle; east on the I-15 to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and the mountain states; south-east on the I-10 to Phoenix and Tucson; and into New Mexico and Colorado. Backhauls into Los Angeles are quoted on the same terms.

Long-haul freight is also the easiest place for a quote to be wrong, because the cost of a lane is not mileage times a rate. Fuel, tolls, the gradient over the Grapevine or the Cajon, the hours the load can be delivered, and whether there is anything to bring back all move the number. Dispatch quotes the lane rather than the distance.

Questions

Long-Haul Trucking, answered.

Which states do you run to from Los Angeles?

Eleven western states: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado. Anything beyond that is outside the operating area, and dispatch will tell you so rather than quoting a lane the fleet does not run.

How long does Los Angeles to Denver take?

Roughly 1,015 miles and two days on the sleeper-cab truck as a continuous move. Without a sleeper the same lane takes longer, because the driver must park for a full ten-hour rest in the middle of it. Give dispatch the required delivery window and the departure is planned backwards from it.

Do you quote backhauls into Los Angeles?

Yes, and a backhaul that fits an existing outbound lane is often priced well below a standalone move, because the truck is returning either way. If your freight moves into LA on a schedule that is flexible by a day or two, say so — it is frequently worth a meaningful discount.
